The First Triumvirate

The First Triumvirate was a political alliance between Gaius Julius Caesar, Marcus Lisinius Crassus and Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus. It has no official status in the senate but had a large amount of control over what took place in the Senate. The triumvirate started when Julius Caesar decided to reconcile both Crassus and Pompey who had been greatly opposed to one another. The alliance combined Caesar's popularity, Crassus's wealth and Pompeys military skill. Caesar and Crassus were already friends prior to the alliance and Caesar solidified is friendship with Pompey by giving him his daughter Julia in marriage. Caesar was eventually elected consul with the help of his new allies and he conquered Gaul. He then helped to get both Crassus and Pompey the consulship which allowed him control of Gaul for an extended period of time. It also gave Crassus the opportunity to fight the Parthians and for Pompey to control Spain. The alliance ended when Crassus died at the hands of the Parthians and Julia died giving birth to Pompeys child. Whilst Caesar was in Gaul Pompey had the time to take full control over the city of Rome. This led to Caesar leading an army across the Rubicon to take Rome for his own. Caesar eventually defeated Pompey and took control of Rome and her lands. He was eventually assassinated by his friend Brutus leaving all of his wealth, land and assets to his nephew Octavian. After Caesars death many people spent time mourning him, such as his niece Atia. However, his lieutenant Marc Antony and his nephew Octavian ended up in a power struggle which led to a second civil war which is talked about in the post titled the Second Triumvirate.

The Second Triumvirate

The Second Triumvirate was an alliance formed by Augustus Caesar, Mark Antony and Lepidus. It was officially recognised by the Senate and lasted for two five year terms. Octavian had been warring against Antony in northern Italy. They decided to form an alliance with Lepidus so they could all focus on stopping Brutus and Cassius. Augustus was allowed to control the Western half of the Empire including Rome, Antony had the East and Lepidus was allowed to control Africa. Eventually Augustus disposed of Lepidus and sent him into exile. He then took control of all of Lepidus' provinces and wealth. This led to a breakdown in the alliance of Mark Antony and Augustus. Tensions rose and eventual war broke out. This however was not classed as civil war as Augustus didn't want the people to panic at the fact that there was another civil war so soon after the previous one. Augustus with the help of his lieutenants such as Agrippa managed to defeat Mark Antony in multiple battle before pushing into Egypt to find that both he and Cleopatra had commited suicide rather than suffer at the hands of Augustus. This led to Augustus having a secure hold over Roman lands and he declared himself princeps and effective emperor of Rome.

The Roman Republic/Empire

The world as we know it today is defined by its history, many civilizations have existed in this world some small and some large. Possibly one of the most important civilizations of our world was Rome. The Roman's were a great people who specialized in warfare and architecture. Some Roman buildings still stand today. The possible peak of Rome was during the Late Republic and The Early Empire. This was a time when the leaders of Rome decided that they should expand their borders to stop possible invasions and to quell rebellious tribal peoples nearby. Julius Caesar was one of the most important people in Rome during the mid 1st century BC. He gained popularity with the people by conquering Gaul and bringing back gifts for the people of Rome. He became a renowned leader in both battle and politics. After a war between himself and his friend Pompey Caesar took control of Rome and worked to make himself Emperor(or as close as he possibly could). This failed and Caesar was assassinated by one of his best friends Brutus. His adopted son Octavian went to war with Mark Antony and Cleopatra after a brief period of being part of the second triumvirate. Octavian eventually defeated Mark Antony in combat and changed his name to Augustus. He then returned to Rome where he declared himself princeps ( emperor) of Rome where he ruled until his death and his adopted son Tiberius took over after him.

World War 2

World War 2 was the largest war ever to occur on this planet. It was fought between all of the major powers of the world at that time, the main countries being Germany, Russia, Britain, US and France. WW2 set the borders of many countries and formed many new countries. A lot of these new countries were Russian sattelite states. The formation of these new countries allowed other countries to gain more power. The main countries that grew more powerful after the war were Russia and the US. Throughout the years after the war these two superpowers would stuggle for power over the world. When the new European countries were formed the US wanted them to be democratic, capitalist states whereas the Russians wanted them to be communist dictatorships, the majority of these countries ended up as communist dictatorships as they were more closesly located to Russia then to the Western European countries. This brought a decline in the growth of these countries with the rest of the world which can still be seen today. For example Ukraine has not grown at the same pace as the Uk. WW2 has affected the world greatly. The majority of the countries that we know today would not exist without WW2. Even though WW2 was a terrible war that no one wanted to happen, it still happened and the outcome of the war has shaped the world as we know it today. Without people like Hitler and Stalin the world today would be in a worse state. We would still be having many small wars in Europe and now there are next to no wars taking place in Europe. WW2 taught us the importance of peace. With peace comes more jobs in both tertiary and secondary economic activities allowing people to have a job without fear of being conscripted into the military.
